Focused ABA therapy is a specialized form of ABA that helps individuals with autism and related disorders develop a specific set of functional skills and behaviors. By targeting these specific areas of need, your child can work towards achieving meaningful and measurable progress. This form of therapy is highly individualized since your child only works on a small set of skills, and treatment plans are tailored to meet those unique needs. At our autism treatment centers, we offer focused ABA therapy as part of our comprehensive approach to supporting children with autism spectrum disorders.
ABA therapy can be delivered in two different ways: focused and comprehensive. Focused ABA therapy is designed to address specific areas of need and work towards achieving measurable progress in those areas. This form of therapy is ideal for children who have specific, and sometimes acute, skill deficits or behaviors that need to be addressed.
In contrast, comprehensive ABA therapy involves a more intensive and holistic approach, where the therapy targets all areas of development and daily living skills. This type of therapy is more suited to children who require more comprehensive support across all areas of development. While both approaches are effective in treating autism and related disorders, the choice of therapy will depend on the individual needs of your child.
During your consultation and evaluation, our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) will work closely with you to determine which approach is best suited for your child’s goals, including whether early intervention ABA therapy is appropriate to promote timely progress.
Our Testimonials
Focused ABA therapy is a part-time program that takes place 10-25 hours each week. Similarly to comprehensive ABA therapy, our team uses evidence-based, positive reinforcement techniques to help develop target skills and behaviors. At Wellspring Learning Centers, our compassionate and experienced BCBAs and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) will break down the functional skills your child is learning into smaller, appropriate goals. These goals are continuously targeted through structure and consistent intervention to increase success.
As progress is made towards each goal, new goals are established in collaboration with parents, and the treatment continues to build upon previous successes. Through focused ABA therapy, including ABA therapy early intervention, children can grow in areas such as communication, social skills, and self-care. Focused ABA therapy can also help in reducing maladaptive autism behaviors like tantrums and aggression. Our staff provides ongoing support and guidance to both parents and children to help them develop the skills needed to achieve the child’s full potential. In Tennessee, insurance coverage for focused ABA therapy can vary depending on the individual insurance plan. However, many major insurance providers in Tennessee do offer coverage for ABA therapy. In fact, Tennessee has a state law, known as the Tennessee Autism Insurance Reform Act, requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which includes ABA therapy. At Wellspring Learning Centers, we work with families to navigate the insurance process and help them access the coverage they need for focused ABA therapy.
Individuals who would benefit from focused ABA plans include those who require treatment for a specific set of functional skills or have severe problem behaviors that need to be addressed as a priority. Focused ABA therapy can help individuals develop a wide range of skills, including communication, social interaction, self-help, academic, and play skills.

At Wellspring Learning Centers we provide both comprehensive and focused ABA therapy programs. Each program is tailored to the individual needs of your child and ranges in intensity from 10 to 40 hours a week.
This means the amount of therapy and level of parent involvement varies as well. Skill training programs involving discrete trial training and natural environment training can require several hours each day. Throughout the day and week, the goal is to create various teaching opportunities through play for your child so that therapists can prompt, shape and reinforce appropriate responses.
Parents will be required to attend bi-weekly family meetings and periodic training sessions to ensure generalization of skills learned during ABA sessions. These training sessions will also help you learn how to better support your child in their daily life.
